Confined Space Safety Training – Course Overview

This training program is designed to equip personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely perform work in confined spaces, including the ability to test atmospheric conditions, operate under work permit systems, and use appropriate breathing apparatus where required.

  1. RIIWHS202E – Confined Space Entry

A confined space is defined as an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is not designed for continuous human occupancy and may present a risk to health and safety. Common examples include:

  • Storage tanks
  • Pressure vessels
  • Boilers
  • Pipes and ducts
  • Sewers and pits

This unit covers the requirements for safe entry, operation, and exit from confined spaces in accordance with relevant legislation and workplace procedures.

Target Audience:
Personnel working in operational roles who are required to enter and undertake tasks within confined or partially enclosed spaces across the resources and infrastructure sectors.

  1. MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres

This unit of competency addresses the skills required to test atmospheric conditions using electronic gas detection equipment to determine whether the environment is safe for work.

Learning Outcomes Include:

  • Accurate use of portable gas detectors
  • Interpretation of gas test results
  • Appropriate response to unsafe atmospheric readings

Applicable Scenarios:

  • Confined and enclosed spaces
  • Hot work environments
  • Storage tanks, silos, ducts, pits, and shafts
  • Transport vehicles, ships, and open areas
  • Situations requiring gas testing prior to or during the execution of a permit to work

Testing Methods May Involve:

  • Direct hand-held operation
  • Lowering the device into a space (e.g., using a tether or line)

The working environment may include unpredictable, high-risk, or hazardous conditions, with both visible and non-visible threats present.

  1. MSMPER200 – Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit

This unit ensures that personnel understand and comply with the Permit to Work (PTW) system, which is critical for managing high-risk and non-routine work tasks.

Core Competencies:

  • Understanding the function and limitations of work permits
  • Complying with permit conditions and controls
  • Carrying out tasks strictly within the defined scope of the permit

Target Audience:

  • Maintenance personnel
  • Contractors
  • All staff engaged in non-standard or potentially hazardous activities on-site

Summary

This integrated training is essential for any workforce involved in high-risk operational environments. It ensures compliance with safety regulations, promotes best practices, and reduces the risk of incidents during confined space work and other hazardous tasks.
